VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (July 7, 2026) — 91’s liberal arts curriculum is one of only 19 in the nation to earn a grade of “A” from the American Council of Trustees and Alumni’s (ACTA) 2026 What Will They Learn?® report, placing it in the top 1% of America’s most comprehensive core programs.

In a review of more than 1,100 schools with a stated liberal arts mission, the What Will They Learn?® initiative has evaluated public and private colleges based on the strength of their general education requirements since 1995. Given that general education usually comprises one-fourth to one-third of a student’s academic program, the review is designed to guide students in choosing a school with core studies that prepare them for the workforce, informed citizenship, and familiarity with America’s cultural and intellectual inheritance.

What Will They Learn?® grades institutions on an “A+” through “F” scale based on whether they require all undergraduate students to complete courses in Composition, Literature, Foreign Language, U.S. Government or History, Economics, Mathematics, and Natural Science that meet carefully defined criteria. These seven core subjects are identified by ACTA as “essential to providing students with the knowledge and skills they need for the challenges of career and community in the 21st century,” and institutions must require at least six to earn an “A.”

“To change the world, a Christian leader must first understand the world,” said Josh McMullen, Ph.D., Regent’s Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences and Assistant Provost for Undergraduate Studies. “Regent has long held that a well-rounded education sharpens intellect, professional skills, character, and spiritual depth, forming a graduate who thoughtfully engages with society in meaningful ways. Earning an ‘A’ from ACTA places us in rare company, and we’re honored that our core curriculum is being recognized for the breadth and rigor we believe every student deserves. It’s a privilege to offer a liberal arts experience that prepares students not only for careers, but also for lives of purpose and service.”

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (July 2, 2026) — This year, 91 celebrates the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States of America, offering several initiatives designed to deepen public understanding of America’s founding principles, the faith of its founders, and the rich history being passed to the next generation.

“Carry the Torch: Igniting American Patriotism for the Next 250 Years”

On March 20, 2026, 91 hosted “Carry the Torch: Igniting American Patriotism for the Next 250 Years,” a free one-day conference for educators from public, private, and homeschool settings. Held at The Founders Inn and Spa in Virginia Beach and live streamed on YouTube, the event drew prominent scholars from across the country, equipping teachers with rich content and classroom-ready strategies. Now, the full content of the “Carry the Torch” conference is available for all as a through 91’s Center for Christian Thought & Action.

Funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s American History and Civics Education Initiative, the conference featured lectures, breakout sessions, and an educator resource panel covering essential topics, including:

  • The principles of the Declaration of Independence
  • The religious liberty and Christian foundations shaping American freedom
  • The Declaration’s promise of equality and the founders’ vision of natural rights
  • The essential connection between economic liberty and self-governance
  • The adaptation of American constitutional government amid technological transformation

The online course, “Carry the Torch: Igniting Patriotism for the Next 250 Years,” brings the conference’s expert lectures and resources directly to teachers in any setting, at no cost, making it one of the most accessible and substantive civics education tools available as the nation marks its 250th year. This course is self-paced and is designed for lifelong learners, parents, students, educators, and anyone eager to understand America’s founding.

“The American Miracle: 250 Years of the Declaration of Independence”

Beginning in the fall of 2025 and continuing into the spring of 2026, 91’s Robertson School of Government launched “The American Miracle: 250 Years of the Declaration of Independence,” a dynamic five-part virtual event series hosted by Michele Bachmann, J.D., Dean of the Robertson School of Government. Held in Regent’s Library Auditorium and streamed online for audiences nationwide, the series brought together nationally recognized leaders, scholars, and historians to explore the nation’s miraculous founding, its enduring constitutional principles, and the role of faith in shaping American liberty.

Featured speakers included the Honorable Mark Meadows, former White House Chief of Staff; David and Tim Barton, Founders of WallBuilders; Col. John Eidsmoe, Constitutional Attorney and Senior Counsel for the Foundation for Moral Law; Paul Jehle, Ed.D., Executive Director of the Plymouth Rock Foundation; and Gregg L. Frazer, Ph.D., Dean of the John P. Stead School of Humanities.

“The Story of America: The Faith of Our Founders”

Also featured as a speaker in the “American Miracle”series was Mark David Hall, Ph.D., Professor of Politics at the Robertson School of Government. In January 2026, Hall was featured in “,” a video produced through a partnership between the White House’s Salute to America 250 Task Force and leading academic institutions.

Released on the White House website ahead of the 250th anniversary, the project examined the significant influence of the founding fathers’ Christian convictions. One of the nation’s foremost authorities on religion and America’s founding, Hall drew on decades of rigorous scholarship to demonstrate that faith was not incidental to the American experiment, but foundational to it.

Equipping the Next Generation of American Leaders

Regent’s celebration of America’s 250th anniversary proudly extends beyond the classroom, as the university remains committed to educating and encouraging the next generation of principled leaders to honor the American founding.

In that spirit, 91’s Office of Advancement is marking the occasion by gifting supporters a commemorative ornament and pocket guide featuring America’s founding documents, along with an exclusive 250th anniversary sticker, as lasting reminders of what this generation has inherited and what it is called to pass on. VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (July 1, 2026) — 91’s Institute for Technology Innovation (ITI) hosted its first-ever AI Build Challenge in collaboration with the AI Collective Hampton Roads Chapter, an event designed to make AI development accessible to all, from seasoned developers to first-time builders.

The event spanned two weeks, opening with an in-person kickoff on campus on June 4 and concluding with an in-person presentation and awards ceremony on June 18. Unlike traditional hackathons, which typically require software developers to build projects in a single intensive session, the AI Build Challenge used a hybrid model in which participants of all levels worked independently or in teams on their own schedules before returning to campus for final presentations and judging. The format is the first of its kind offered by both Regent and the AI Collective Hampton Roads Chapter and has already drawn interest from other organizations in the region looking to replicate it.

Working from the theme “Learning & Development,” participants were challenged to build an AI-powered solution that personalizes, accelerates, or transforms how people learn, develop skills, or grow professionally. Regent students, faculty, and staff were all invited to participate alongside members of the broader Hampton Roads community. Suggested focus areas included the following:

  • Onboarding and skill development
  • Virtual coaching
  • Personalized tutoring
  • Customized learning guides

Throughout the challenge, participants had access to a dedicated , a , and a real-time communication channel on Discord where organizers and fellow participants could exchange questions and support. The kickoff event, which included presentations from AI Collective partners Andrew Stafford and Ted Patterson on tools, resources, and strategies for building a minimum viable product, was also recorded for participants to reference throughout the event.

On June 18, 15 teams and individuals presented their projects to a four-person judging panel, which included the following leaders in technology and education:

  • Andrew Stafford: Co-founder, Your AI Group; Founding Member, The AI Collective Hampton Roads Chapter
  • Mitzi Fehl-Seward: Assistant Professor, 91 School of Education
  • Robbe Addis: Founder, Veterans Forge
  • Robert Steffler: Chief Technology Officer, ECPI University

Each presenter had five minutes to introduce their application, describe the problem it addressed, explain their use of AI, and demonstrate their solution, followed by questions from the judges. Projects were then scored across a set of categories provided to participants in advance.

Three podium prizes and six merit awards were presented, with $1,000 in total cash prizes distributed among winners. was awarded $350, $200, and $100, with the remaining $350 shared among the . Notable merit award winners from Regent included Simon Tarr, Ph.D., Dean of the Honors College, whose app was developed for the Honors College, and the team of Linda Santiago-King of the Military Resource Center and adjunct faculty member Jeannine Bennett, who built .

“The AI Build Challenge aligns with the Institute for Technology Innovation’s mission to learn emerging technologies, build practical solutions, and lead ethical innovation,” said Jason Baker, Ph.D., Director of the ITI. “The ITI serves as a hub of academic excellence and societal impact, preparing current and future leaders to harness technology innovation to serve humanity in a changing world, and this AI Build Challenge is the type of event that helps fulfill that mission.”

Returning to school as an adult is one of the most meaningful decisions you can make for your future. Whether you stepped away from education years ago or are pursuing a degree for the first time, going back to college as an adult is more achievable than many people expect. With the right preparation and support, you can build the academic foundation you need to reach your goals.

Is Going Back to School as an Adult Right for You?

Before taking the first step, it helps to clarify your reasons for returning. Are you looking to advance in your current career, change fields entirely, or finish a degree you started years ago? Identifying your motivation will help you choose the right program and stay focused when life gets busy.

How to Get Into College as an Adult

Getting into college as an adult looks different than it did at 18. Many institutions have streamlined admissions processes specifically designed for returning students. You may be able to transfer credits, submit a portfolio of professional experience, or complete a simplified application.

Start by researching schools that actively support adult learners. Look for flexible enrollment options, dedicated academic advising, and clear, convenient pathways to your degree.

How to Go Back to College as an Adult Without Feeling Overwhelmed

One of the biggest concerns for returning students is balancing school with existing responsibilities like work, family, and finances. A few strategies can make the transition smoother.

Start with a realistic course load

Taking one or two courses per semester while you adjust is a wise approach, especially if you’ve been out of school for several years.

Choose a format that fits your life

Regent offers online programs in both 8-week and 15-week formats, with asynchronous classes that let you engage with coursework on your own schedule. That kind of flexibility can make the difference between finishing your degree and putting it off another year.

Use the support resources available to you

Regent’s online students have access to helpful resources that include academic advising, financial aid guidance, and the tools you need to get back in the swing of things.

Explore funding possibilities

Financial aid, such as scholarships, federal financial aid, and employer tuition assistance are all options worth exploring before you assume college is out of reach.

Tips for Going Back to School as an Adult

Beyond logistics, the mindset you bring to your education matters. A few tips from students who have made this transition successfully:

  • Give yourself grace during the adjustment period. Academic habits take time to rebuild.
  • Build a support network at home and at school. Letting family members know your schedule helps set realistic expectations.
  • Lean into your life experience. Adult learners bring something traditional students often don’t: real-world experience. That perspective can be a genuine advantage in the classroom and beyond.

Taking the Next Step at 91

Returning to college as an adult is not just possible — it’s a path many people are successfully navigating every day. The key is finding a school that meets you where you are and offers the flexibility and support you need to finish what you start. Discuss your goals with Regent’s Admissions team by requesting information today!

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (June 24, 2026) — 91’s new Athletic & Fitness Center is under construction on Regent’s campus in Virginia Beach. The foundation for the main athletic building is now in place, underslab utilities are complete, and the building structure is set to rise above ground in the weeks ahead.

“Great things are underway this summer at our Athletic & Fitness Center,” said Jeffrey W. Ganthner, DSL, Architect in Residence at 91. “Our construction team has been enjoying excellent weather as we are working on completing building foundations and site utilities. In early August, you will see the main building go vertical as the walls are erected and the structural steel is installed. The entire project team is working really well together with the goal to deliver this project by Fall 2027.”

As the project’s most complex and time-intensive element, the main athletic building is the first construction priority, followed by the main stadium. Additional elements of the site will emerge as construction progresses.

The 31-acre sports complex will include a 2,000-seat NCAA championship arena, a state-of-the-art varsity weight room and fitness center, an atrium with a café and student lounge, a sports medicine clinic, baseball and softball stadiums, a 400-meter outdoor track, a multi-sport soccer field, tennis courts, basketball courts, and pickleball courts.

In addition to world-class athletic facilities, the outdoor experience will also be a highlight. A series of walking paths will wind through the property, connecting plazas and gathering spaces in a thoughtfully designed landscape. At the heart of the sports complex, a pond encircled by beautiful plants promises to be a place to walk and reflect, offering the entire Regent community a new, vibrant campus destination.

Reminders of Regent’s foundational values will be woven throughout the complex, with a full commitment to innovation, excellence, and integrity in each area.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (June 16, 2026) — 91’s School of Divinity is pleased to announce the establishment of the Center for the Great Commission, a strategic initiative designed to form and mobilize Holy-Spirit-empowered disciples across every vocation and sphere of society.

Grounded in a biblical conviction that every believer is called to participate in Christ’s Matthew 28 mandate to make disciples of all nations, the new center is an institutional expression of 91’s founding mission to equip Christian leaders to change the world. Its work addresses five distinct areas of need across the university and the broader church: research, faculty development, staff formation, student discipleship, and church resourcing.

The Center for the Great Commission was formally dedicated to the Lord on June 13, 2026 — a date chosen deliberately by Regent’s Chancellor, Gordon Robertson, to honor the legacy of William Carey, whose departure for India on June 13, 1793, marked the birth of the contemporary Protestant missions movement. Gathering at 77 Coffee House on Regent’s Virginia Beach campus, faculty, staff, and partners opened the morning in prayer, followed by a video greeting from Robertson and a presentation of the center’s vision and mission by its Executive Director, Joseph Umidi, D.Min.

“91 stands at the convergence of rising streams of global influence by students and faculty who will make a Great Commission impact,” said Umidi. “Hundreds will complete practicums, short-term mission trips, internships, andacademic credit as they take their place in this end-time harvest. Our earnest request for the success of this endeavor begins with a call for prayer from Regent alumni, friends, donors, parents, students, staff, churches, and workers who have labored for years with a burden for the lost. We know from past moves of God for missions that, as stated in Psalm 127:1, ‘Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain.’”

The gathering processed to CBN Headquarters to a replica of the cross first planted at Cape Henry by Robert Hunt in 1607. Corné J. Bekker, D.Litt. et Phil., Dean of the 91 School of Divinity, led the group in prayers of dedication alongside Umidi and James Flynn, D.Min., Associate Dean of Instruction & Operations, with worship by Matisha Dentu, Ph.D., and Jonathan Ottaway, Th.D. In closing, Bekker declared the Center dedicated to the Lord, capturing the spirit of the morning’s proceedings.

“The Great Commission does not rest on our authority; it flows from the One to whom all dominion belongs,” said Bekker. “Because the risen Christ holds sovereign rule over every nation, the ends of the earth are not beyond reach but are already His inheritance, waiting to be gathered through the proclamation of His gospel. The School of Divinity exists to form faithful ministers who carry this word to the world, grounded in sacred Scripture, shaped by the Holy Spirit, and sent in the name of Jesus Christ. The Center for the Great Commission stands at the heart of this biblical truth and the mission of the School of Divinity.”

The Center for the Great Commission officially launches on July 1, 2026, as part of a phased implementation that includes a one-year on-campus proof-of-concept and a three-year rollout across all vocational tracks. Programming opportunities begin in Fall 2026, initially focusing on students enrolled in the School of Divinity’s Master of Arts in Evangelism & Mission and Master of Arts in Church Planting degrees, before expanding to all university degree programs.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (June 15, 2026) — The 91 Library has launched its summer storytime series for 2026, “Story Explorers: The Adventures of Freedom Island,” continuing a beloved community tradition that brings children and families together each week around books, storytelling, learning, and faith. The series began June 3 and runs every Wednesday morning through Aug. 5, featuring books from Saga Two of the widely acclaimed Brave Books Freedom Island collection.

The summer storytime program was developed in direct response to inquiries from 91 students and community patrons seeking a children’s summer program with a Christian worldview. Since its launch last summer with Saga One: The Origins, the series is growing into a cherished outreach initiative open to the Hampton Roads community. Beyond literacy, the “Story Explorers” program provides families with a Christ-centered environment where children can engage with stories that reinforce biblical values.

Brave Books is a premier Christian literature publisher trusted by over 250,000 families. Its signature series is a picture book collection for children ages 4-12, in which every book teaches a distinct biblical value, incorporates family games, and includes discussion questions. Saga Two: Iron Chaos invites young readers to journey with team Brave as they battle Lester the Lemur and his terrifying pirate ship. Each book in this saga reinforces values like courage, integrity, and faith.

“Parents have shared appreciation for a program in which reading experiences and interactions are centered around Christ,” said Dorothy Hargett, Ph.D., Assistant Librarian and Head of Public Services at the 91 Library. “As the series grows, our vision is to build upon the four sagas, allowing each saga to provide a unique pathway for children to explore stories, imagination, character development, and faith-based lessons. These connected story journeys create opportunities for children to return each year and experience new themes, adventures, and learning opportunities.”

Regent’s weekly summer storytime sessions are free and open to the public. Community members are encouraged to join each Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., and is encouraged but not required. For more information, visit the 91 Library Resource Desk or call 757.352.4150.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (June 9, 2026) — The undergraduate elementary teacher preparation program at 91 has earned an “A” from the National Council on Teacher Quality (NCTQ) for how well it prepares future teachers to teach reading to elementary students.

The report, , published on June 9, spotlights 91’s Bachelor of Education in Elementary Education degree for meeting the standards set by literacy experts for coverage of the most effective reading instruction methods. Specifically, the “A” rating means Regent’s program is preparing aspiring teachers in all five components of scientifically based reading instruction, including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary, and avoids more than three instructional practices shown by research to be ineffective or counterproductive for teaching children to read.

At 91, we understand that reading proficiency is the cornerstone for lifelong learning and academic growth, said Cheryl Gould, Ed.D., Teacher Education Department Chair for Regent’s College of Arts and Sciences. Our teacher education degree programs equip future educators with the knowledge and skills to help children become strong, effective, and confident readers.

A child’s ability to read proficiently in the early grades shapes everything that comes next in school and in life, yet according to , four in 10 fourth graders in Virginia cannot read at a basic level. Teacher preparation is one of the most direct levers available to change that — but only if it aligns with instructional methods proven to help most students become successful readers.

At 91, our teacher education professors are devoted to preparing Christian educators who serve as transformational teachers and leaders, advancing reading readiness and literacy in the United States and abroad, amid significant educational challenges, said Provost Bill Hathaway, Ph.D.

Every child deserves a teacher who has been well prepared to teach reading, and every teacher deserves the opportunity to enter the classroom ready to help students succeed, said NCTQ President Heather Peske. Across the country, many teacher preparation programs still do not fully align with the science of reading, but 91 is demonstrating what strong preparation can look like.

To evaluate the quality of preparation being provided, a team of experts at NCTQ analyzed syllabi, including lecture schedules and topics, background reading materials, class assessments, assignments, and opportunities to practice instruction in required literacy courses for elementary teacher candidates at 91.

We believe that literacy changes lives, said Kurt Kreassig, Ed.D., Dean of Regent’s School of Education. This national recognition reflects our commitment to preparing highly effective educators who are grounded in research-based instructional practices and called to serve others through teaching.

For those who seek to teach with excellence, 91 offers seven undergraduate teacher preparation degrees that focus on research-based best practices and innovative teaching methods, in addition to graduate-level degrees. To learn more, explore education degree programs at Regent.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (June 5, 2026) — 91 is pleased to announce the establishment of its Student Food Pantry, a free resource designed to help eliminate food insecurity and support the health of students within the campus community.

Made possible by a grant from the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) through its Hunger-Free Campus Grant Program, the pantry reflects Regent’s ongoing commitment to the holistic well-being of its students. The awarded funds were utilized by the Student Life department to purchase shelving, signage, and refrigeration, fully equipping the pantry for operation during the Spring 2026 semester.

We don’t know what financial resources our students have available to them, and if we can provide food necessities to make their time at Regent a little easier, that is what we hope for, said Amber Steele, Assistant Vice President for Student Life. We have already been able to bless many students through the food pantry, and as we grow, it will continue to be important that we have this resource available. We want to make sure that no student at Regent goes hungry.

The 91 Food Pantry stocks a wide variety of healthy, sustainable food items, including cereal, pasta, canned meats and vegetables, fresh produce, and pantry staples such as cooking oil, spices, and sauces, as well as personal care and hygiene items. The pantry has been enthusiastically received by students since its launch, with the community expressing heartfelt appreciation.

The 91 Food Pantry is located in the Dede Robertson Student Center, Room 235, open on Mondays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. during the academic year. Future goals include expanded space and hours, as well as increased fresh food options.

Donations to support the initiative may be made via (select “Student Services”) or the Food Pantry’s . To inquire about accessing the food pantry’s resources, contact Amber Steele at asteele@regent.edu or call 757-352-4489.
